February 2021 PD - Advocacy During an Austerity Budget

Program Description:

In this budget climate, library leaders need an effective plan to advocate for their funding. Whether you are in a community, on campus, or at a school, you will be facing COVID-related budget pressures. Join EveryLibrary’s executive director John Chrastka for a discussion of how austerity budgets work and what new advocacy techniques and skills you need to support your next budget request. Come ready to learn what the current revenue forecasts are for states, municipalities, and education, along with effective ways to gauge community priorities and sentiments during COVID-19, and some of the best ways to frame your advocacy message in light of current concerns. We hope for you to come away with actionable insights on building coalitions and partnerships to help advocate for your library.

Presenter Bio:

John Chrastka is co-founder and executive director of EveryLibrary, the only national political action committee for libraries, and the EveryLibrary Institute, a public policy and tax policy think tank for libraries. Since 2012, EveryLibrary has supported public libraries in numerous funding negotiations with elected officials and on 115 election days to help to secure over $1.8 billion dollars in stable tax money for libraries. The EveryLibrary Institute publishes funding-focused research and recently hosted the Library Advocacy and Funding Conference as a key part of its training agenda.

Library Juice Academy offers a range of online professional development workshops for librarians and other library staff, focusing on practical topics to build new skills. Workshops are taught asynchronously, so you can participate as your own schedule allows, within a four or six-week period.

PCI: The Arizona State Library now has a subscription to PCI Webinars, giving Arizona library staff access to one live webinar a week and to the webinar archives. PCI Webinars offers webinars specifically for library staff. Email Ann Marie Creegan at acreegan@azlibrary.gov to register.
